Jillian, the pup, and I were literally the only two at this lake a few Saturdays ago. There was no one else to be seen. Big Meadow to Round Lake is a moderate hike that’s not too lengthy. It’s about three miles to reach the lake. The hike is up and down, but not too bad at all. You’ll gain about 1,000 feet of elevation and the actual lake is only at about 7,900 feet above sea level. The lake is the start of the Upper Truckee River that flows to Lake Tahoe. Take a look at our hike below. Roll the video!
I woke up quite early for this hike. Jill and I took off from Zephyr Cove at about 7am. We made our way to Big Meadow and got ready to go. I put Jill’s UNR harness on and filled my new Granite Rocx pack with treats, a ball and a towel. I loaded the cooler part of the pack with a drink and sandwich for when we reached the lake. Big Meadow Trailhead starts by crossing Highway 89 or Luther Pass with a rocky step like uphill. You’ll see signs for the Tahoe Rim Trail, which is where the trailhead starts from. We reached the first post to where you can split left to Scott’s Lake or right towards Meiss Meadow. We went right and followed the trail over a bridge into Big Meadow. As usual I let Jill off in the meadow to run around like crazy; and run around like crazy she did!
After going through the beautiful meadow we reached the constant uphill of the rocky trail. You’ll come to some wooden steps and continue to follow a stream. Once you reach the crest, you will go down a few switchbacks until you reach another wooden post. Here you can go right towards Dardanelles Lake, which you can read more about in one of my previous posts, Big Meadow to Dardanelles Lake – Don’t mind if I do!, or left towards Meiss Lake. We followed the trail left and in less than a mile we reached beautiful Round Lake. I sat and had some lunch, while Jill played in the water. There was no one to be seen and the reflection from the water was amazing. On our way back however, we did pass several hikers on their way to the lake. Below are some pictures of another great adventure with Jill!
The hikes starts from Big Meadow Trailhead off of Highway 89 or Luther Pass. To get there drive towards the “Y” in South Lake Tahoe. At the “Y”, you will want to veer left towards Meyers. Go through Meyers and make a left at Highway 89. Continue about 2.5 miles and you will see Big Meadow Trailhead on the left. The parking lot is free and a good size.

Also, bring your fishing and camping gear to the lake as it’s a great lake to spend a day or night. Have you hiked to Round Lake or even traveled further to Meiss Meadow? Leave a comment below!
